Designed by Jonathan Turner, this stunning kitchen, which fills a contemporary, glass extension built onto an Edwardian house, was recently features across 8 pages of interiors glossy, Essential Kitchens, Bedrooms & Bathrooms.  The extension was the vision of Jonathan’s clients – Tony and Natasha Prendergast.  Having being properly bitten by the selfbuild-meets-renovation bug, the Prendergasts’ knew exactly what they would like to do with the rundown 1950s extension that was originally attached to their home…  Knock it down!

Inspired by the most modern of glass architecture, the Prendergasts set to work on designing and building the vast, open-plan space.  Then, having pored over a large number of kitchens in print, they tasked Jonathan with bringing their new space alive.

Natasha and Tony wanted a clean-lined, contemporary kitchen that would complement the extension.  They wanted it to be able to accommodate informal suppers, friends and family, their young daughter…and most importantly, Natasha’s love of cooking.

Happily, the Prendergasts’ kitchen achieves all these things and more.  From the get-go, Jonathan listened to his clients’ desire for a kitchen that whilst airy and spacious, would also be warm and welcoming.  The kitchen’s dining ‘zone’ – a striking black table with seating for 8 – looks out onto the house’s garden, through bi-fold doors, which can be opened in good weather.  Meanwhile dining, entertaining and cooking come together seamlessly, thanks to the generously proportioned, solid oak breakfast bar that adjoins the kitchen’s granite topped island.

Cabinetry throughout the kitchen is described by Jonathan as ‘shallow Shaker’ – a minimalistic interpretation of classic Shaker style – and the perfect choice for a contemporary scheme.  Handbuilt at Bryan Turner Kitchen Furniture’s premises in Wymondham, south Norfolk, the kitchen has been finished in a beautiful, cool blue.  Not only does the colour complement the kitchen’s palette of cool tones, but it is also perfectly in keeping with the home’s proximity to the Suffolk coast.

Having completed a Raymond Blanch cookery course, Natasha knew exactly what she wanted when it came to choosing the kitchen’s appliances.  Two built-in Gaggenau ovens each offer a range of thirteen different settings, whilst food and drink can be stored in tailor-made conditions, thanks to a Fisher & Paykel Cold Drawer, which – at the touch of a button – can vary its temperature between fridge/freezer, pantry or wine cooler conditions.  A Gaggenau combination microwave oven and steam oven, plus warming drawer, complete the suite of state-of-the-art cooking appliances.

The kitchen’s eye-catching extractor – custom-designed and manufactured by Westin – was intended to be a focal point from the beginning.  Extending over the induction hob area, it is suspended from the ceiling by steel cables and – mindful of the kitchen’s multi-purpose space – is very, very quiet.  Clean-up isn’t forgotten, either.  A sensibly placed Fisher & Paykel Dish Drawer sits underneath the kitchen’s island and within easy reach of the food preparation area.  Meanwhile, through a ‘secret’ door in the kitchen’s rear bank of floor-to-ceiling cabinetry, there is a fully equipped utility room.
